| My two-year-old was having a good day the last time I had to run into the grocery store to pick up a jug of milk. She was calmly holding my hand and wasn’t pulling the Captain Crunch off the shelf as we rushed to the dairy section. Ahead a boy about the same age as my daughter was throwing a fit. His mother grabbed his wrist, dragged him in front of us and pointed at my little girl. “Why can’t you behave like her?” she said. I picked up my daughter and hurried by as quickly as I could. The only thing more obnoxious than a child throwing a fit in public is a parent yelling at their child for throwing a fit. All children have temper tantrums in inconvenient locations once in a while. There is no reason to feel embarrassed when it happens. A child who is having a melt down does not reflect badly on the parent. However, the way the parent treats the child when he/she has an outburst does reflect on the parent. Fits happen sometimes and that’s okay. |
