Let your kids solve some of their own problems, say Jim Fay and Charles Fay PhD in Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood. As parents we feel it is our duty to fix anything that goes wrong with our children. If Sally gets a bad grade in math, then we should go to the teacher and ask how the grade could be raised. If Charlie breaks a window while playing baseball, we should pay for the window so that Charlie won’t get into trouble.
When Sally and Charlie become adults, nobody will be there to pay the fees on bounced checks or to pay the fines for parking tickets. There will be no second chances if they decide to drink and drive and get into a fatal car wreck. Allowing our children to suffer some consequences of their mistakes when they are young, will be a lot less painful for them than when they are adults.

You don’t always have to be in control.
Give choices. Jim Fay and Charles Fay PhD in Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood say “battles over control benefit no one. They create tension and make warriors out of otherwise peaceful people.” When you give choices, make sure they are acceptable to you and don’t bother anybody else. For example, let them pick between two sets of pajamas. They could decide which toy to play with at bath time. Ask if they want to use a little or big fork during dinner. Give only two choices and if your kid picks a third one say, “That wasn’t a choice.” Then decide for them. Quickly move on. Giving away some of your control teaches your child how to make wise decisions.

Enjoy your kids. Sometimes modern parenthood seems to entail nothing more than shuttling your kids from one activity to the next. Little time is left to watch a beetle or a butterfly, to look closely at a flower, or to watch a robin eat a worm. Between academics, sports, dance classes, and music lessons, there isn’t much time to play. Think about what we could be missing—a chance to listen to what our children are feeling and thinking, a chance to say they are special, or a chance to give them a hug. In our efforts to prepare our kids for a competitive world, we forget allow play. Take time every week to do nothing but have fun.

| My two-year-old was having a good day the last time I had to run into the grocery store to pick up a jug of milk. She was calmly holding my hand and wasn’t pulling the Captain Crunch off the shelf as we rushed to the dairy section. Ahead a boy about the same age as my daughter was throwing a fit. His mother grabbed his wrist, dragged him in front of us and pointed at my little girl. “Why can’t you behave like her?” she said. I picked up my daughter and hurried by as quickly as I could. The only thing more obnoxious than a child throwing a fit in public is a parent yelling at their child for throwing a fit. All children have temper tantrums in inconvenient locations once in a while. There is no reason to feel embarrassed when it happens. A child who is having a melt down does not reflect badly on the parent. However, the way the parent treats the child when he/she has an outburst does reflect on the parent. Fits happen sometimes and that’s okay. |

| A Mommy Thought for today…
Are you ever tempted to say to your child, “Why can’t you behave more like Ashley or Johnny?” Stop. Breath. And Think. Think about what you don’t know about them. Two-and-a-half-old Ashley might still wake up several times at night. Johnny’s mother probably finds her alarm clock disassembled and or broken. Think about the message you are sending to your own child. “Johnny and Ashley are good children and they are better than you, kid.” No reasonable parent truly believes someone else’s children are better than their own. Make sure your kids know you think they are the best. The next time they act up, stop, breath and think about what makes them special and find a way to tell them. |
